This is part of the SAP Lumira Discovery blog series.
Of all the Self Service BI tools available in the market today, SAP Lumira Discovery offers the best connectivity to SAP data sources such as SAP BW, HANA and Universes. While connecting to these sources, it facilitates easier Single Sign On (SSO) enablement, role-based security, multiple connectivity modes, and more.
In this blog, we shall cover SAP Lumira Discovery’s data acquisition options in-depth for these various SAP source systems.
- SAP BW
- SAP HANA
- SAP BusinessObjects Universe
- Other SAP Data Sources (SAP ERP, BusinessOne, SAP HANA VORA etc)
1. Data Acquisition from SAP BW (Live and Import)
SAP Lumira Discovery can connect to SAP BW in two ways:
- Live (BICS): In this mode, the latest data is available in the document without the need for manual refresh. It supports Security Token Service (STS) based SSO.
- Import (JDBC): Data is acquired into the tool and refreshes are performed with scheduling
In addition, SAP Lumira Discovery can connect to BW through direct/local or managed connections.
- Local: Connection utilizes SAP Logon that is installed in the client system
- Managed: Uses OLAP connection that is pre-configured & managed in the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform
Once the connection is established, we would be able to access the InfoObjects & BEx queries based on InfoAreas and Roles. We would then be able to choose the dimensions, measures, variables and filter conditions as shown below.
The BW Live connectivity in SAP Lumira Discovery provides robust integration with BEx queries, offering support for various BEx features such as prompts, elements, hierarchies, display settings, variables and functionalities.
When importing data from BW, the user would be prompted to choose the required dimensions, measures and filter conditions to restrict the data.
2. Data Acquisition from SAP HANA (Live and Import)
Connectivity options to SAP HANA is very similar to that of SAP BW.
You could connect to SAP HANA using the Live mode (HTTP/HTTPS-based INA connectivity) or Import (JDBC) mode. The Live mode supports SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) based SSO.
Similarly, the connections can be direct/local (using SAP HANA Studio) or managed (defined in the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform).
Once the connection is established, we would be able to access the HANA views based on the folder and table structure.
When importing data from SAP HANA, the user would be prompted to choose the required dimensions, measures and filter conditions to restrict the data.
New features supported by SAP Lumira Discovery for Live HANA analysis include:
- Better hierarchy support for Parent-Child and Level based hierarchies, including drill-through options using hierarchies
- Enhanced support for HANA variables/prompts
- All modeling and calculations delegated to HANA
The support matrix for SAP HANA and SAP BW connectivity is shown below:
Note1 – Direct connections for live connectivity based documents cannot be published to BI platform from SAP Lumira Discovery. This is applicable for SAP HANA and SAP BW Live connections.
Note2 – Managed connections for live connectivity of type prompt are not supported
Note3 – SNC is also a Security layer. The SNC settings for encryptions will be used for the STS communication when setting up your SSO to BW
Via Discovery – Offline data refresh is not possible in SAP Designer 2.0.
Note4 – There is no need of Kerberos on desktop for SAP HANA connectivity via managed or direct connections for single sign on (Applicable for SAP Lumira 2.0 SP02 onwards)
3. Data Acquisition from SAP BusinessObjects Universe
As far as SAP Lumira Discovery is concerned, SAP Universe connectivity is supported only for UNX formats in the Import mode. (Note: SAP Lumira Designer can however use live connectivity while connecting to Universes). The Query Panel is similar to the connector available in SAP BusinessObjects WEBI and is efficient in handling universe features.
Once the connection is established, we would be able to access the Universe folder structure. We would then be able to choose the dimensions, measures and filter conditions.
To leverage the latest functionalities of acquiring data from BW (Import) or SAP Universe, download the extensions from Main Menu (Main Menu > Extensions or Ctrl+J)
Users would need to download the extensions one at a time and then restart the Discovery application to activate it.
4. Other SAP data sources
When accessing the Query with SQL option, we can find 6 different options to connect to other SAP data sources as shown below,
Once you connect, you could look up table data or write your own freehand SQL queries to retrieve data.
