Securing BusinessObjects servers both internally as well as from external users is one of the most important task during the Landscape design. When you plan for the security, you should consider securing BI content on all the levels below (whichever applicable).
- BusinessObjects Server Nodes security
- Reporting Data sources security
- BI content security
- Data security
- Object level security
We are going to see security of BI content in each layer in a series of blogs. Let us start with BI Platform server’s security now
BusinessObjects Server Nodes Security
Server nodes in a BI platform could be deployed in a standalone server (All in one) or in multiple tiers i.e. into multiple nodes depending upon usage pattern and the processing capability requirement of the user community. Below are few of the well-known components
- BI Platform Server
- Web Servers
- SMTP Servers
- FTP Servers
- SharePoint servers
Along with this, if you want to deploy Add-ons such as Lumira, you may require to go for a separate server to get the maximum capabilities out of it. We are not going to cover more on individual server’s security as the topic of discussion is vast and might not be in a BI Platform administrator’s scope. However, I would suggest you all to understand the below terms as they are really required to understand the security basics.
|Reverse proxy||A reverse proxy is a type of proxy server that retrieves resources on behalf of a client from one or more servers. These resources are then returned to the client as if they originated from the proxy server itself.|
|HTTPS (also called HTTP over TLS, HTTP over SSL, and HTTP Secure) is a protocol for secure communication over a computer network which is widely used on the Internet which ensures the communication between the client and server is always encrypted.|
|Transport Layer Security (TLS) and its predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), both frequently referred to as “SSL”, are cryptographic protocols that provide communications security over a computer network.|
From my Next blog, we are going to see more in detail about security on reporting Data sources, BI content (Reports, Universes), Data security and finally Object level security in universe.
