We often receive questions from IT & business executives about the different editions of HANA, some of which are widely recognized and some that aren’t. We felt it would be nice to compile a quick introduction which finally resulted in this blog.

Unveiled at Sapphire in May 2010 and termed as the “New Reality of Real Time”, SAP HANA (High Performance Analytic Appliance) has come a long way from where it began. While it started as an appliance that redefined performance, it gave rise to several variants over a period of time with each catering to differing business & technological imperatives. While the appliance-based model is still available today, Tailored Data-center Integration (TDI) is positioned as the preferred, flexible and cost effective model for deploying HANA solutions.
Now let’s take a look at the major HANA Editions released till date
Amidst curious onlookers, HANA as a database made its debut with the ramp-up program for “BW on HANA” in Nov 2011 which has been helping customers realize better reporting performance (more than what BWA could provide) and data load performance. In Oct 2012, SAP released its first in-memory PaaS offering, HANA Cloud Platform (HCP), which allows customers, partners and independent developers to quickly extend, build and run cloud business applications.
Jan 2013 marked a major milestone for SAP HANA, with the release of “SAP Business Suite on HANA”. It became the fastest growing software in SAP’s history garnering 1000 customers by May 2014.
Year 2013 also saw the release of two other HANA editions. One was HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) which brought together the performance of HANA and ease of the cloud into a single powerful model. The other was SAP HANA Live which delivered pre-defined data models, reports and applications that could be rapidly deployed and consumed.
Coming next was SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA (SAP S/4HANA), the 4th generation ERP software optimized for SAP HANA which became available in Feb 2015. SAP brought in wide range of simplifications, innovations and combined 40 years of its experience from various industries into this software. It offers on premise, cloud and hybrid deployment options.
SAP BW Edition for HANA (SAP B/4HANA) got released in Aug 2016. This next generation data warehouse has fewer object types, enabling rapid deployment of BW data models and reporting applications.
