SAP Data Warehouse Cloud is an all-new Data Warehousing solution on Cloud by SAP. It is powered by SAP HANA Cloud Services and enables advanced analytics using built-in SAP Analytics Cloud. The scope of this blog includes User creation and Roles in SAP Data Warehouse Cloud in the version that was released in November 2019.
Security
Security is an important feature in any tool or organization. The ‘Security’ tab present in the navigation panel helps you to manage users and roles. This would primarily be managed by System / IT administrator who will create users and assign them with specific roles. Users can then be assigned to Spaces – which is a logical partition or area within SAP Data Warehouse Cloud for the creation of tables, views, ER models and SAP Analytics Cloud stories.
The three main categories under the Security tab are as follows.
- Users
- Roles
- Activities
1. Users
As a system administrator, you would want to add/remove team members to SAP Data Warehouse Cloud and assign them specific roles.
New Users can be created one at a time or you can also add multiple users in a single shot by importing user details either from a CSV File or from active directory.
- You can add a user one at a time by selecting
an icon after which details must be keyed in across the text fields as shown below. Once we click on the save icon the user will be added to the system and an invitation email will be sent to the user with the required details.
- To add multiple users in a single shot, click on the import icon
, select the source file, and map the source columns to target.
- The option to import users from Active Directory is not available yet.
- You can add a user one at a time by selecting

2. Roles
The Roles are assigned while adding Users to the System. Roles define the level of access in the spaces to which the users are given privilege. Multiple roles could be assigned to a single user.
SAP Data Warehouse Cloud offers seven types of user roles to support different categories of users across the organization. These roles are grouped as shown below.
Category | Role |
BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE | BI Content Viewer |
BI Content Creator | |
DATA WAREHOUSE CLOUD | DW Viewer |
DW Modeler | |
DW Integrator | |
DW Administrator | |
OVERALL | System_Owner |
Type of access defined for various roles
The below matrix details the type of access for each of the roles across multiple available features. For more information on these features please refer here.

SYSTEM_OWNER
The System Owner is the primary administrator and contact person for the system. This provides the System Owner unrestricted access to the SAP Data Warehouse Cloud system. Only one user in the system can have this role. The administrator can re-assign the System_Owner role to any other user. While re-assigning, the admin should assign a new role for the old System Owner.
3. Activities
In the ‘Activities’ tab, the system keeps track of all the activities that are being carried out and the same can be downloaded in csv format for further analysis.
Only those users who are assigned with the role DW Administrator will be able to access the Security tab and its features Users, Roles and Activities.

We expect more powerful and exciting features in the product upon further releases which will help understand your business more easily and take informed business decisions better than before.
